The Ochre Trail is situated about 20km from Worcester on the N1 to De Doorns.
Our guide talks enthusiastically about the history of this abandoned 3'6" railroad that negotiates the steep climbs of up to 1:40 of the Hex River Pass between Hexpas and Matroosberg stations. Built originally in the 1870's, but replaced by the new modern (and 8 km shorter) rail in 1989, this track runs through one of the most beautiful areas in South Africa. Two coaches (seating 18 adults respectively) are drawn by a vintage Fordson 35 horse power tractor.
The tractor was adapted for the highest levels of security and comfort of the passengers when they travel at a maximum speed of about 20 km/h. Japie Januarie, the driver, grew up in a family who, for generations since the times of the S.A.R. & H. (South African Railways & Harbours), made their livelihood on this track.
The Hexpass Express offers three rides. A trip from Hexpas Station to Tunnel Station and back, including time to enjoy a picnic at Tunnel Station, takes about 4½ hours. For the history enthusiast, a 5½ hour trip is offered from Hexpas Station to the Kaffrarian Rifles Monument (read about the history) and back. A third trip from Hexpas Station right up to the summit at Matroosberg Station, a beautifully restored small Karoo station, is also offered. Passengers on all the trips are shown the 130+ year old railway tunnel. During the ride, the guide identifies some of the indigenous plants (including 'botterboom' and aloe) as well as some curious wildlife. The remains of British stone forts still guard the handmade cutting as they did during the Boer War in the early 1900s, and each century-old rock inscription on the walls of this cutting tells its own story.

Ceres was founded in 1849 after the opening of Michell's Pass. Ceres was then the last place of rest for the weary travellers before they ventured upon the rugged road to the interior, leading to the diamond and gold fields.
The proposal to build the railway line to the north through Ceres was rejected by the local council, because apart from the fact that transport riders would lose their only source of income, the council also felt that this would destroy the tranquility of Ceres. It was at this stage that fruit growing in this region become a serious possibility and from 1910 trees were planted on a large scale.
Ceres is home to South Africa's finest fruit farms. Today there are more pear trees in the fertile region than all of the Cape fruit regions together. The region dominates in the export of peaches, but apples, plums, grapes and potatoes are also produced. From mid November to January the well-known Klondyke Cherry farm is crawling with people to pick their own cherries. The tour includes a visit to the Ceres Fruit Growers factory - the largest in the southern hemisphere and a fruit farm where they pack peaches, to a farm where peaches are dried, a scenic drive to Gydo Pass, lunch at Barumba Coffeeshop and Pub. The internationally branded Ceres Fruit Juices are also produced here.
Book a guided hiking tour with local San rock art specialist and learn more about the san lifestyle and traditions. To take a step back in time, visit the Ceres "Togryers Museum". The name of the museum originates from the big influence the transport riders had on the development of Ceres.
